Difference Between CMMI Assessment and Appraisal

CMMI is a standard which  provides guidance for efficient, effective improvement across multiple process disciplines in an organization.
It benefits the organization by providing a common, integrated vision of improvement. The ultimate benefit is improved performance
An appraisal is an activity that helps you to identify strengths and weaknesses of your organization’s processes and to examine how closely the processes relate to CMMI.
sometimes people confused in terms of "Appraisal", and "Pre-Assessment". The SEI distinguish it in these words...

"An appraisal only evaluates a process where as an assessment is an appraisal done for the sake of process improvement. "

The Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) is the official CMMI (and People CMM) appraisal method used to evaluate organizations’ processes and provide ratings.
